A-062 Adiposity Indices are Independent Predictors of Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease in a Korean Population

Abstract Background Adiposity indices have been proposed as predictors for cardiometabolic diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Currently, limited studies have been conducted to investigate the association between the adiposity indices and metabolic-associated fatty liver diseases (MAFLD) in a Korean population. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the adiposity indices and MAFLD in the Korean population. Methods This study consisted of 32,555 Korean adults underwent abdominal ultrasonography and biochemical testing at a comprehensive health promotion center. Adiposity indices include visceral adiposity index (VAI), dysfunctional adiposity index (DAI), and lipid accumulation product (LAP). The MAFLD was defined as having hepatic steatosis by abdominal ultrasonography and the presence of overweight/obesity, type 2 diabetes, or the evidences of metabolic dysregulation. The diagnostic performance of adiposity indices was analyzed by receiver operating characteristics curve and compared with lipid indices such as triglyceride. The association between adiposity indices and MAFLD was evaluated using multivariate logistic regression. Results A total of 9798 (30%) individuals had MAFLD. The level of adiposity indices was higher in the population with MAFLD than in the counterparts (P < 0.0001 for all). The area under the curve of the LAP was 0.847 (95% CI: 0.842 to 0.851, sensitivity: 79%, and specificity: 75%), followed by the DAI (AUC: 0.775, sensitivity: 72%, and specificity: 70%) and VAI (AUC: 0.772, sensitivity: 73%, and specificity: 69%), and triglyceride (AUC: 0.762, sensitivity: 70%, and specificity: 70%). The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that LAP (odds ratio = 2.273, P < 0.0001), VAI (odds ratio = 2.093, P = 0.0005), DAI (odds ratio = 2.077, P < 0.0001), and triglyceride (odds ratio = 1.845, P < 0.0001) were independently associated with MAFLD. Conclusion This study demonstrated that adiposity indices are independently associated with MAFLD in the Korean population. Adiposity indices is superior to simple triglyceride. The LAP, VAI, and DAI could be an alternative predictor of an increased risk of MAFLD.
