Despre crucile din piatră descoperite în cimitirele medievale bucureștene. Studiu de caz, cimitirul bisericii Sf. Nicolae Udricani / Stone crosses in Bucharest medieval cemeteries. Case-study, the Sf. Nicolae Udricani Churchyard

The subject of the present study are the stone crosses in the cemetery of the old Udricani neighbourhood around St Nicholas Church in Bucharest. Archaeological excavations uncovered 130 burials of the former inhabitants of the area. The funerary monuments though (49 – complete and fragmented) could not be linked to any of the burials, having been disturbed and displaced during various works in the churchyard. According to the inscriptions of the crosses, they had been erected to the memory of monks and mostly, lay people living in the neighbourhood. The same inscriptions also suggests that the crosses had been planted to mark not only individual graves but also family plots, as indicative by the syntagm and their families, or the frequent listing of several names, charcateristic to this cemetery.
