Monitoring of cucurbit fruit fly (Bactrocera cucurbitae Coquillett) in bitter gourd using para-pheromone traps in relation to abiotic factors

AbstractThe study investigates the population dynamics of Bactrocera cucurbitae in bitter gourd crop during the 32nd to 42nd standard meteorological weeks (SMW). Male fruit flies were monitored using cue-lure baited bottle-type traps installed above the crop canopy. Trap catches were recorded daily, and weekly averages were calculated. The results indicated a steady presence of fruit flies throughout the study, with a peak of 9.14 flies per trap in the 38th SMW, corresponding with specific temperature and humidity conditions. A significant positive correlation was observed between rainfall and fruit fly populations (r = 0.5786), while temperature and humidity showed non-significant correlations. Multiple regression analysis revealed that weather factors collectively accounted for 43% of the variability in fruit fly populations.
