Probabilistic and deterministic approach to assessing the level of contamination of soil-like fraction from landfills

The present paper sets out the results of an investigation into the estimation of the pollution lev-el of the soil-like fraction from landfills. The investigation was conducted using a deterministic and probabilistic approach based on quantile analysis, and the results obtained demonstrate that the use of quantile analysis allows for the differentiated determination of pollution levels and their probabilities. In contrast, the deterministic approach has the potential to lead to under- or overestimated results. The approach is beneficial in justifying differentiated management for soil-like fractions in the context of landfill liquidation projects

Abstract

The present paper sets out the results of an investigation into the estimation of the pollution lev-el of the soil-like fraction from landfills. The investigation was conducted using a deterministic and probabilistic approach based on quantile analysis, and the results obtained demonstrate that the use of quantile analysis allows for the differentiated determination of pollution levels and their probabilities. In contrast, the deterministic approach has the potential to lead to under- or overestimated results. The approach is beneficial in justifying differentiated management for soil-like fractions in the context of landfill liquidation projects
