COMPARISON OF BIOPHYSICAL PROFILE AND MODIFIED BIOPHYSICAL PROFILE IN PREDICTION OF FETAL OUTCOME
Background:Antepartum fetal surveillance is essential for identifying fetuses at risk of adverse outcomes, especially in high-risk pregnancies.Biophysical Profile (BPP) and Modified Biophysical Profile (MBPP) are widely used tools for this purpose. While BPP is comprehensive, MBPP is simpler and less time-consuming. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of BPP and MBPP in predicting fetal outcomes. Methods: This prospective comparative study was conducted over one year at Navodaya Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, Raichur.A total of 100 antenatal women with singleton pregnancies beyond 34 weeks of gestation were randomly assigned to two groups: Group A (n=50) underwent assessment with BPP,and Group B (n=50) with MBPP.Fetal outcomes were assessed based on APGAR scores at 1 and 5 minutes and NICU admissions. Results: Normal scores were observed in 84% of the BPP group and 74% of the MBPP group. The APGAR score of 7-10 was recorded in 88% of BPP cases and 96% of MBPP cases. NICU admission rates were comparable (10% in BPP vs. 12% in MBPP). Both methods showed similar positive and negative predictive values. The p-value of 0.01 indicated no statistically significant difference between the groups. Conclusion: Both BPP and MBPP are reliable tools for assessing fetal well-being. MBPP, being simpler and faster, is particularly advantageous in busy antenatal clinics and resource-limited settings.Given the comparable diagnostic accuracy,MBPP can be used as an effective alternative to BPP for routine fetal surveillance.Abnormal findings in either method warrant further evaluation with Doppler velocimetry
