PCL and Chitosan-ZrO2 Bilayer Coated Magnesium Substrate For Orthopaedic Applications

Magnesium substrates, with their low density, biocompatibility and biodegradability, have gained significant attention in the orthopaedic field. Though, its uncontrolled degradation is considered as the main limitation and continuous efforts are being made by the researchers to control the corrosion. In the present study, polycaprolactone (PCL) /chitosan and polycaprolactone/chitosan-ZrO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> coatings are developed to diminish the dissolution of magnesium substrates. The study on hydrogen gas evolution and weight loss measurements showed that the double layer which is made up of PCL and chitosan-ZrO<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</inf> enormously controlled the corrosion of magnesium which will be necessary for implant applications.
