Developing a Low-Cost Magnetic Sensor System for Settlement Monitoring in Landfills

The monitoring of settlements in sanitary landfills is essential to ensure their structural stability and environmental safety. This work presents the development and evaluation of an automated settlement measurement system using magnetic reed switch sensors. The prototype was designed to perform continuous, low-cost measurements, with strong potential for replication in other waste disposal sites. The tests conducted demonstrated stability in the obtained values and alignment with the expected theoretical results, considering the inherent errors associated with the physical dimensions of the sensors and the low sensor density in the experimental setup. Despite these limitations, the system exhibited satisfactory performance, demonstrating feasibility for practical implementation.
