Express Assessment of Fouling Development in Technical Systems and under Experimental Conditions

New methodological approaches for assessing the development of periphyton communities that form fouling in technical water supply systems, as well as for assessing the effectiveness of antifouling properties of experimental protective coatings are considered. The fouling of experimental substrates was studied in the bay of the Kaniv Reservoir (the Dnieper River). To unify the description and characterization of fouling under certain conditions, the concept of fouling formula was introduced. The proposed methodological techniques can be used in hydrobiological monitoring of technical ecosystems and in experimental studies of various measures to limit fouling.

Abstract

New methodological approaches for assessing the development of periphyton communities that form fouling in technical water supply systems, as well as for assessing the effectiveness of antifouling properties of experimental protective coatings are considered. The fouling of experimental substrates was studied in the bay of the Kaniv Reservoir (the Dnieper River). To unify the description and characterization of fouling under certain conditions, the concept of fouling formula was introduced. The proposed methodological techniques can be used in hydrobiological monitoring of technical ecosystems and in experimental studies of various measures to limit fouling.
