Unveiling the Veiled: An Empirical Analysis of Workplace Culture-Induced Incivility towards Women Officials in the Bangladesh Civil Service
In contemporary work environments, the manifestation of incivility towards female employees is predominantly associated with the prevailing workplace culture. This study seeks to investigate the influence of workplace culture on incidents of incivility directed at women officials within the Bangladesh civil service (BCS).Data for this study are collected in 2021 through a self-administered survey questionnaire distributed among a sample of 279 first-class gazetted female officers representing 10 ministries in Dhaka, under the purview of the Bangladesh government.Employing multiple and multinomial logistic regression techniques, the collected data are rigorously analyzed. The empirical findings present compelling evidence of incivility directed towards women officials within the BCS, with workplace cultural factors such as 'power distance,' 'lack of reciprocity,' and 'job uncertainty' identified as significant contributors to this phenomenon.Notably, the selfperceived aspect of workplace culture, namely 'work stress,' exhibits a modest reduction in incivility. Our findings collectively demonstrate that prevailing workplace cultural elements systematically disadvantage women professionals in BCS.Therefore, we recommend implementing targeted civility training programs to raise awareness about workplace incivility against women and foster more inclusive professional norms, representing a crucial step toward systemic reform.
