Artificial Intelligence in the Foot and Ankle: The Applications in 2025
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence in machines, with machine learning and deep learning (DL) allowing the model to learn complex patterns in the data. The application of AI in medical fields is rapidly progressing, but in foot and ankle surgery, the current applications may be limited.AI-driven predictive models have shown promising potential in influencing real-time decisions and improving surgical outcomes by facilitating screening, diagnosis, risk assessment, preoperative planning, and shared decision-making.AI-driven predictive models have shown potential in various foot and ankle conditions. The current review looks at the various applications of AI and machine learning in the present scenario; significant applications are available even today for image identification, fracture classification, and even injury risk detection. The application of the available level of AI science can be significant for combining AI with wearable sensors and for evaluating foot and ankle biomechanics in sports and gait.Surgical planning for foot and ankle procedures can be enhanced, and generative design can be used to make three-dimensional (3D) models for various applications. The literature documents a significant influence of AI on the development of prostheses for the foot and ankle.ChatGPT has also evolved to the extent that significant use of this in research is being done, and many journals are allowing it to be used for research publications.Despite the immense potential of AI in foot and ankle surgery, it should still be considered an evolving field with the potential to enhance clinical decision-making, improve surgical outcomes, help make better functional implants, and streamline healthcare delivery.
