Harmonizing Species and Genera with Sexually Dimorphic Flightedness: Alethia Champion, Anamphidora Casey, and Phedius Champion (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae: Alleculini)

Sexual dimorphism within Alleculinae is known from several instances of flighted, macropterous males and flightless, brachypterous or apterous females. The genus Alethia Champion was only known from elongate and flighted males from the southern United States and Mexico. We review the species known from the United States and associate flightless females with each of the previously described species which until now were placed in the genera Anamphidora Casey and Phedius Champion which are only known from female species. We further describe Alethia hispida, sp. nov. from the Big Bend region of Texas along with updated diagnoses and a key to the species of the United States. A discussion of sexually dimorphic flightedness is presented along with the following synonymies: Alethia Champion (= Anamphidora Casey syn. nov., Phedius Champion, syn. nov.), Alethia liebecki (Fall) comb. nov. (= Phedius funereus Schaeffer, syn. nov.), Alethia quadricollis (Fall) (= Anamphidora campbelli Marshall, syn. nov.). The following combinations result from the generic synonymies. From Phedius: Alethia carbonaria (Champion), A. chevrolati (Champion), A. cylindricollis (Champion), A. funesta (Champion), A. hidalgoensis (Champion), A. hirta (Champion), A. lapidicola (Champion), A. mexicana (Champion), A. obovata (Champion), A. opacula (Horn). From Anamphidora: Alethia kimberleei (Marshall) and A. parvula (Casey). A lectotype is designated for Alethia carbonaria Schaeffer, which is a senior synonym of A. liebecki Fall and junior homonym of A. carbonaria (Champion).
