Comprehensive Cost-Benefit Analysis of MBESS and SBESS in Distribution Power System

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are used in diverse applications that enhance the reliability and performance of distribution systems. Net demand variations may occur at different times and locations. Mobile BESS (MBESS) can offer greater operational flexibility than Stationary BESS (SBESS), but may incur higher operational costs. This paper explores various BESS applications based on testing at the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC), quantifying and monetising their value. A Monte Carlo methodology is applied to model uncertainties in MBESS travel distance using random sampling, while a lifetime cost-benefit optimisation framework is developed for both MBESS and SBESS to maximise the total profit for BESS service providers by balancing operational costs and service revenue. Results demonstrate that MBESS generates 31.6% higher revenue than SBESS, highlighting its significant economic advantage despite its transport cost.
