Satellite-Enabled Emergency and Warning Testbed for V2X Use Cases
Ubiquitous and continuous connectivity is crucial to enable anytime, anywhere communication for vehicle-toeverything (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{V 2 X}$</tex>) use cases. The advent of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{6 G}$</tex> aims to achieve this by integrating non-terrestrial networks (NTNs), e.g. satellite, with terrestrial networks. Recently, 5GAA has advocated the inclusion of NTNs within V2X use cases such as emergency call (e-call) and road hazard information, including adverse weather conditions (AWC). Therefore, this paper aims to develop and implement a satellite-enabled emergency and warning testbed (SEWT) to provide connectivity for V2X use cases of e-call and AWC via satellite constellations operating on low Earth orbit (LEO). SEWT develops an ETSI-compliant reference architecture, software stack, and messaging protocol for intelligent transport systems. Furthermore, the SEWT platform incorporates a human-machine interface to facilitate interaction between vehicle users and service provider agents. The performance of SEWT is empirically evaluated and tested in different real-world scenarios in terms of reliability and delay.
