Breast Impalement Injury with an Iron Rod: A Case Report
Introduction: Isolated breast injuries are infrequent occurrences in clinical practice. Impalement injuries are generally rare surgical emergencies worldwide with breast impalement injury being rarer. Case Presentation: We report a case of a 20-year-old woman who sustained an impalement injury to the right breast with an iron rod after falling into a pit. She was resuscitated and immediately taken to the operating theatre where the impaled iron rod was successfully extracted under direct vision and debridement done. She had delayed primary wound closure and was discharged in satisfactory condition. Conclusion: Breast impalement injury is an extremely rare surgical emergency. Appropriate resuscitation and prompt surgical intervention in the operating theatre are crucial to minimizing morbidity and enhancing the patient’s outcome.
