A Giant Parieto-Temporo-Occipital Scalp Abscess- A Rare Complication of Chronic Sinusitis

Introduction: Most cases of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) tend to resolve even without treatment. Nevertheless, a few poorly managed ones could lead to various complications such as subdural/epidural abscess, meningitis, and osteomyelitis of facial and scalp bones. Case Presentation: We present a young boy aged 17 with chronic sinusitis managed with over-the-counter medications and herbal treatments for some months. The patient presented with a massive scalp swelling. A computed tomography scan showed large scalp abscesses with subdural extensions. Incision and drainage were done, followed by aggressive antibiotic therapy for about a month. Treatment was successful, and the patient is currently doing well. Conclusion: Early diagnosis of complications of upper respiratory tract infection is key to its management. It is also important to aggressively manage the complication with surgical treatments such as incision and drainage and craniotomies while applying antibiotic therapies for extended periods.
