Prospective biotechnologies for the treatment of oil-contaminated wastewater

Pilot-scale trials of the technology for treating petroleum-containing wastewater were conducted at the wastewater treatment facilities of KomiAviaTrans JSC in Syktyvkar and at a sludge storage site in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug (YNAO). The tested technologies included the "BIOTRIN" bioremediation agentbiogeosorbent. The treatment efficiency was monitored by controlling the petroleum hydrocarbon content and measuring dehydrogenase activity. During the pilot-scale experiment at the KomiAviaTrans JSC treatment facilities, the possibility of optimizing the petroleum-containing wastewater treatment technology through a single application of the "BIOTRIN" bioremediation agent in the summer period was demonstrated. The treatment efficiency reached 91%. As the petroleum hydrocarbons underwent oxidation, a decrease in the number of microbial cells was observed, accompanied by a corresponding decline in dehydrogenase activity. The project implementation for the treatment of oil-contaminated water at the sludge storage site in YNAO, carried out in October under temperatures ranging from –3°C to +5°C, confirmed the effectiveness of the "GEOLEX®" Biogeosorbent. As a result, the concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in the water was reduced to permissible levels according to the maximum permissible concentrations established for water used in concrete and construction mortar preparation.
