Modeling and chaotic dynamics analysis of a bistable locally active memristor

Abstract A novel bistable locally active memristor model based on Chua’s unfolding theorem is proposed in this study. Unlike conventional memristors, the proposed model features two stable equilibrium points and two distinct locally active regions, significantly enhancing its functionality in nonlinear circuits. The memristor exhibits dual hysteresis loops under different initial conditions, confirming its bistability. Nonvolatility is demonstrated via power-off plot analysis, which clearly shows two asymptotically stable equilibrium points. Notably, rapid and reliable switching between these states can be achieved through voltage pulse stimulation, highlighting the model’s potential for memory applications. DC V-I analysis reveals two separated locally active regions, both exhibiting negative memristance. Small-signal analysis further elucidates the operating mechanism in these regions, enabling the derivation of an equivalent circuit and explicit conditions for oscillation generation. To demonstrate practical utility, a four-dimensional chaotic system is constructed using the proposed memristor. Chaotic dynamics are thoroughly verified through theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. These results underscore the memristor’s broad applicability in advanced nonlinear circuits and its advantages over existing devices in terms of stability, switching speed, and functional versatility.
