MOLECULAR-GENETIC STUDY OF TICKS FOR RICKETTSIOSES IN KAZAKHSTAN

Ticks are important ectoparasites and vectors responsible for serious infectious diseases in humans and animals. The aim of this study was to investigate the species composition of ticks in the Turkistan, East Kazakhstan, and Abai regions of Kazakhstan and to determine the presence of Rickettsia DNA using a molecular genetic study (PCR). In September–November 2024, a total of 137 ticks were collected, belonging to 7 species of the genera Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis, and Hyalomma. In the Abai region, Dermacentor marginatus predominated (65 specimens), with Rickettsia DNA detected in 85.7% of the samples (95% CI: 63.7–97.0%). Rickettsia DNA was also found in D. reticulatus. In the East Kazakhstan region, the infection rate in D. marginatus was 83.3% (95% CI: 51.6–97.9%), while no Rickettsia DNA was detected in Hyalomma asiaticum. In the Turkistan region, Rickettsia was identified in two samples (14.3%; 95% CI: 1.8–42.8%) from H. turanicum and H. rufipes, the latter of which was recorded in the region for the first time, presumably introduced by migratory birds. The overall proportion of positive samples (detection of the genetic marker of rickettsial pathogen) was 63.8% (95% CI: 49.9–76.1%). These findings confirm the active circulation of Rickettsia in natural foci in Kazakhstan and underscore the importance of ongoing monitoring of ticks and associated pathogens, particularly in the context of tick range expansion and changing epidemiological conditions.
