The scent of stimulation: Anterior commissure mediates olfactory phenomena induced by DBS of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) affects 1.3% of the general population, with 10–20% of patients remaining refractory to standard treatment and therefore possible candidates for surgical intervention [1, 2]. In such refractory cases, deep brain stimulation (DBS) targeting the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) has shown long-term improvement in 66% of the implanted patients [3]. Stimulation of the VC/VS region often produces transient side effects during initial DBS programming with variable prognostic implications [4].
