A STUDY TO IDENTIFY STRESSORS AND COPING RESPONSES OF CAREGIVERS OF ORAL CANCER PATIENTS DURING RADIATION ONCOLOGY TREATMENT
Purpose:The study aimed to assess the stressors experienced by caregivers of oral cancer patients, examine their coping strategies, and explore the association between stressors and coping mechanisms. Methods:A quantitative research approach with a descriptive cross-sectional design was employed to evaluate stress and coping strategies at a single point in time.Using a non-probability convenience sampling method, 100 caregivers of oral cancer patients were included.Stress levels were measured using the Kingston Caregiver Stress Scale (KCSS), while coping strategies were assessed with the Brief COPE Inventory. Results:The study found that the majority of caregivers, 52 (52%), experienced moderate stress, 25 (25%) experienced mild stress, and 23 (23%) experienced severe stress.Regarding coping strategies, 42 (42%) used them to a small extent, 33 (33%) used them moderately, 12 (12%) used them extensively, and 13 (13%) did not utilize any coping strategies. The most commonly reported stressor was financial difficulties (60%), and most caregivers predominantly employed positive coping strategies. Conclusion:Financial challenges were identified as the primary stressor among caregivers of oral cancer patients.Promoting positive coping strategies and implementing interventions to modify negative coping methods are essential to support caregivers' well-being.
