Toward Multicultural Identity Formation in Classical Vocal Pedagogy: Cultivating Artistic Expression Through Vocal Performance
This paper reframes classical vocal pedagogy to explore how performance fosters identity formation, cultural negotiation, and educational change.Using a qualitative, comparative case study design, it analyzes two instructional models: a conservatory-based program at The Juilliard School and a group of independent vocal tutors operating in diverse urban contexts.Drawing on institutional documents, curriculum artifacts, and reflective writings from educators and students, the study reveals that students engage in embodied cultural negotiation when performing across vocal traditions. The findings suggest that performance-based pedagogy enables hybrid identity construction, while adaptive instruction enhances both emotional resonance and interpretive agency.Instructors who employ culturally responsive strategies-such as selecting a multilingual repertoire and coconstructing interpretation-help students' link technical skills to cultural self-understanding.At the same time, structural inequities, including Eurocentric repertoire norms and limited faculty diversity, continue to restrict the expressive and artistic possibilities available to marginalized students.By positioning the singing voice as a tool for cultural self-authorship as well as musical development, this study proposes a theoretical model of multicultural identity formation in the classical vocal studio. It further offers policy recommendations for equity-centered curricular reform, calling for institutional practices that recognize students as cultural agents. This research contributes to growing dialogues in music education on intercultural pedagogy, decolonized curriculum, and identity-based instruction.
