Innovative financial instruments as drivers of university environmentalization

In the 21st century, the issue of climate change has become a global challenge that requires urgent action at all levels of society, including higher education institutions (HEIs). As centers of intellectual and technological progress, HEIs should play an active role in shaping environmentally conscious behavior, developing innovative solutions, and promoting sustainable development. However, many Ukrainian HEIs face significant financial barriers when attempting to implement green initiatives. Limited government funding and the absence of well-established public-private partnership mechanisms hinder the implementation of environmental transformations. This highlights the need for the adaptation of innovative financial instruments that would help universities reduce costs and their negative environmental impact. This article examines the effectiveness of using financial instruments such as green bonds, energy service contracts, and climate funds, while identifying the main barriers and opportunities for their adoption in Ukraine. Practical recommendations are provided to enhance the financial and environmental efficiency of resource management in HEIs. The article also offers a detailed review of international experience regarding the use of green financial instruments in the higher education sector. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of integrating green financing solutions into the broader strategic goals of universities, including improving infrastructure, fostering sustainability-oriented research, and facilitating the development of green technologies. The findings emphasize the potential benefits of applying green financial instruments for HEIs to achieve both environmental and financial sustainability, thus contributing to the global effort to mitigate climate change and ensure a sustainable future. Finally, the paper proposes specific strategies for overcoming existing financial and regulatory challenges, which could serve as a model for other countries in the context of climate-conscious university management.
