BACK TO THE FUTURE: LESSONS FROM THE PAST SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE EUROPEAN ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH

To promote research and development in orthopaedic surgery and related sciences in Europe through interdisciplinary coordination, exchange of scientific and technical experience, and education”. This is the official mission statement of the European Orthopaedic Research Society (EORS) founded in March 1991 in Munich, Germany. EORS stands on the shoulders of historical pioneers: from the revolutionary external bone fixation methods of the 19th century to the development of total joint replacements in the mid-20th century, past discoveries that continue to shape the trajectory of orthopaedic innovation. Today, EORS leverages these historical lessons to drive advancements in regenerative medicine, AI-assisted diagnostics, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. The refinement as well as unceasing innovation of multitasking biomaterials, the diligent exploration of stem cell-based therapies and the launch into personalized orthopaedic interventions has opened new frontiers in musculoskeletal repair and rehabilitation. By integrating time-tested principles with novel technologies, EORS keeps on fostering collaboration and translational research, thus bridging the gap between cutting-edge science and clinical applications. This keynote lecture aims to: i) Trace the historical foundations that shaped the EORS; ii) Showcase recent scientific breakthroughs; and iii) Analyze the role of EORS in driving future research and innovation.
