O crioulo de Sri Lanka e as suas propriedades fonológicas

The phonological specificities of creoles are an object of study that is currently in lack of research. In order topreserve the value and contribution of creole languages to linguistic diversity, this work focuses on the phonological properties of the creole originating in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon), with the main objective of consolidating some of its fundamental aspects. The aim is, essentially, to analyze the phonological inventory and the suprasegmental properties related to the syllable and accent of the creole in question. To do so, a corpus developed from a list of words was selected, which allowed establishing the syllable count between Portuguese and the creole, identifying the main structures and syllabic patterns of the creole language and also producing graphics that show the analysis of the results obtained. In addition, with the help of relevant bibliography, general notions about Sri Lanka’s socio-history and some particularities about its phonology are presented, while making a brief comparison with the phonology of Portuguese. It was first detected that the consonant and vowel systems of the two languages are mostly similar in the phonemes they present. Then, it was found that Portuguese and the creole have a similar syllabic word count, with few differences. Various types of structures and patterns referring to the syllable were also observed in the creole, with the CVCV structure and the CV pattern being the predominant ones. Finally, it was understood that the accent obeys specific rules in the creole, making it a particular language and also representative of the influences of Tamil and Sinhalese, the substrate languages
