Português e variação reflexão crítica partindo do discurso do Primeiro-Ministro de Portugal no Dia Mundial da Língua Portuguesa

This work proposes some critical remarks on Portuguese considering its variational component. Starting from the discourse of the current Prime Minister of Portugal on World Portuguese Language Day on May 5, 2024, we intend to reflect on linguistic identityand its relationship with variation and the sociocultural dimension of language. To achieve this, we build an argument in favor of the affirmation of variation at the intra-and extralinguistic level, the need to design educational practices that include variation and the function of everyday linguistic practice in social recognition and identification. We will argue based on data on socioletal and individual variation and on the role of socioeconomic variables in the development of linguistic competence to defend a variational teaching of grammar and an informed view on language as a cultural practice, a source of identity identification, collective experience and cultural diversity. Deconstructing three key ideas from the selected text, we combine knowledge from the scope of Linguistics with a reflective sociological approach in a discussion that promotes fair, adequate and sustainable practices of linguistic diversity.
