Reflections on Education Reform of Giscience under the Wave of Generative Artificial Intelligence

This study explores the integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into Geographic Information Science (GIS) education through a systematic examination of current challenges and proposed solutions. The research identifies three major limitations in traditional GIS pedagogy, which are insufficient interdisciplinary skill, outdated technical content, and resource-intensive practical training. To address these issues, a comprehensive implementation framework is proposed by incorporating GenAI across five educational dimensions as teaching, learning, assessment, evaluation, and management. Specifically, key innovations include dynamic curriculum design, humanmachine interactive learning, student-centered competency assessment, multi-dimensional intelligent evaluation, and datadriven educational resource management. Furthermore, challenges such as academic integrity risks and over-reliance on GenAI are discussed, with recommendations for a balanced governance. Future directions emphasize the development of domain-specific artificial intelligence (AI) model, creation of immersive study environment combining augmented reality and GenAI, and formulation of robust ethical guidelines. To sum up, this study contributes a validated pathway for GenAIenhanced geospatial education and promote the ongoing intelligent transformation of geospatial education.
