Optimizing Development and Production of Complex Mid-Cretaceous Reservoirs Using Integrated Multi-Physics Sensor Technology

Abstract The Mid-Cretaceous reservoirs in Southeast Kuwait pose substantial challenges for hydrocarbon development due to their complex geological nature, which includes thick and thin-bedded sandstone intervals and tight carbonate formations with intricate petrophysical properties. These complexities often limit the effectiveness of conventional logging methods. This study introduces an integrated multi-physical sensor approach that combines Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), high-resolution borehole imaging, and advanced fluid sampling to deliver a more comprehensive reservoir evaluation. In the thin-bedded sandstone units, sand count extracted from borehole image logs was integrated with NMR-derived pore-size distribution to enhance estimates of sand content, porosity, and fluid mobility. This dual-domain evaluation enabled more accurate delineation of productive intervals, many of which are typically underrepresented by conventional log analysis due to resolution and averaging effects. The improved quantification of net sand from image logs also contributed to more reliable reserve calculations, particularly in intervals where thin pay zones are easily missed. In a tight-heterogenous carbonate formation, high-resolution borehole imaging combined with core-calibrated micro-facies analysis facilitated the identification of secondary porosity features—key indicators for fluid storage and flow. These insights supported the design of more effective stimulation strategies and optimized completion practices. Overall, the integrated multi-physics workflow significantly improved reservoir characterization and enabled better-informed production planning in this geologically complex settings.
