Editorial: Celebrating 50 Years of Macromolecular Chemistry and Polymer Research at the University of Bayreuth

In November 2025, the University of Bayreuth (UBT) will commemorate its 50th anniversary.Over the past five decades, UBT has become a hub of academic excellence in northern Bavaria, among others recognized for its contributions to macromolecular chemistry and polymer research. This special issue is dedicated to the research on Macromolecular Chemistry that resonates through the many research groups that worked at UBT and spread from UBT into the world. This editorial takes a retrospective look at the milestones, influential figures, and scientific achievements that have shaped the university's standing in the macromolecular community and gives a glimpse into the contributions to this special issue.A Vision Right From the Start: The University of Bayreuth was founded in 1975 with the ambitious goal of establishing a research-oriented institution that would excel in the sciences and engineering.Right from the start, research on polymers and Macromolecular Chemistry was envisioned as a cornerstone of the university's scientific mission and declared as one of four key research areas. The intention was to foster interdisciplinary research that bridged the gap between chemistry, physics, and engineering, guided by a clear understanding of the importance of polymer chemistry for modern science and technology.
