Substantial enhancement of strength and corrosion resistance in magnesium alloy via a multi-component gradient heterostructure

The strategic design of heterogeneous structures in magnesium (Mg) alloys has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in strength–ductility synergy, yet concurrent enhancement in corrosion resistance remains insufficiently addressed. Herein, we propose a novel gradient structure, which achieves a 509 MPa tensile strength with a tenfold reduction in corrosion rate. Excessive lattice defects may accelerate corrosion degradation in Mg alloy. Nevertheless, multi-component gradient heterostructure enables acquisition of a strengthening from heterogeneous defects while forming a corrosion-resistant surface layer through optimized precipitate morphology and distribution. Our results demonstrate a practical route to achieve attractive mechanical properties and highly corrosion resistance in Mg alloy.
