Effective Solicitation Strategies: Preparing, Presenting, and Securing Major Gifts
Effective solicitation represents a decisive step in securing major gifts. More than a transactional request, it is a structured dialogue requiring preparation, clarity, and adaptability. This article explores three phases of solicitation: preparation (donor research, objectives, supporting materials), execution (rapport-building, case presentation, making the ask), and response (listening, addressing concerns, offering alternatives). Drawing on examples from the American Heart Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, it highlights how transparency and preparation strengthen donor trust and gift outcomes. By integrating scripting, objection-handling, and role-playing into practice, non-profits can transform solicitation into an authentic, donor-centered process. The findings emphasize that success depends not only on persuasive communication but also on trust, responsiveness, and alignment with donor motivations.
