Descriptive Statistics for Non-Profit Research and Practice
Descriptive statistics provide the foundation for analyzing quantitative data, enabling non-profit organizations to summarize large datasets into actionable insights for program evaluation, strategic planning, and stakeholder communication. This article explores measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of dispersion (range, variance, standard deviation), emphasizing the importance of reporting variability alongside averages. It examines data visualization and storytelling techniques to enhance accessibility and impact, offering practical guidance on presenting findings through charts, graphs, and narratives tailored to diverse audiences. Illustrative examples from education, health, and community development programs demonstrate how descriptive statistics can inform decision-making, improve accountability, and strengthen advocacy. Ultimately, the article positions descriptive statistics as both technical and communicative tools essential for evidence-based practice in the non-profit sector.
