Decoupled Modulation Processes of Amplitude and Phase Based on the Staged Control on Reconfigurable EIT‐THz Metasurface
Abstract Reconfigurable metasurfaces (RMS) are the potential modulation platform for the next‐generation communication system. However, there are coupled modulation processes for amplitude and phase. This problem is particularly pronounced for the terahertz (THz) metasurfaces with a single reconfigurable layer. In this paper, a method of staged controlled electromagnetic resonance is proposed to realize the decoupling of the modulation processes for amplitude and phase. To validate this method, a reconfigurable electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metasurface is designed that integrates two pairs of functional vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) switches on each meta‐atom, supporting amplitude and phase modulations, respectively. Simulation and experimental results show that the decoupled modulation processes for amplitude and phase can be stage‐triggered by the laser with different power levels. The two modulation stages can occur at the same frequency. This work provides an interesting decoupled amplitude and phase modulation method for new multifunctional devices in the next‐generation communication system at the terahertz band.
