Ayurvedic understanding of chronic mucopurulent bronchitis in children: A narrative review
Chronic mucopurulent bronchitis in children is an enduring respiratory condition marked by persistent cough, thick sputum production, and recurrent infections, often leading to compromised growth, immunity, and quality of life. Ayurveda provides a compelling alternative framework by correlating this condition with Kaphaja Kasa, a Kapha-dominant respiratory disorder described in classical texts. This appraisal delves into the Ayurvedic understanding of chronic bronchitis, exploring its etiological factors, symptomatology, pathogenesis (Samprapti), and management through herbal formulations, dietary regulation, Panchakarma, and Rasayana therapies. The Ayurvedic emphasis on strengthening digestion (Agni), clearing toxins (Ama), and enhancing immunity (Ojas) aligns with preventive and long-term management goals. Juxtaposing modern biomedical insights with Ayurvedic wisdom underscores the potential of integrative treatment strategies in addressing chronic pediatric respiratory disorders with improved outcomes, fewer side effects, and greater focus on root-cause eradication and immune fortification.
