A Nova Economia Estrutural

Sino-African relations are increasingly the subject of criticism and debate, as many Western actors warn of the danger of a "New Colonialism" on the continent. This research aims to discuss to what extent China is assisting (or not) in the development of the region. To this end, the developmental theory of the New Structural Economics will be used to demonstrate possible strategic directions to better leverage Chinese investments. To illustrate this, the relations between China and Ethiopia will be analyzed to understand how the Ethiopian government has taken a strategic stance to leverage a structural transformation through Chinese credits. It concludes that China indeed offers an opportunity for mutual gains and industrialization for the continent, but this depends on the agency of actors within the continent itself.
