Faith-Based Advocacy for Social Change in Low-Income and Emerging Economies

Faith-based organizations occupy a distinctive role in advancing social change, particularly in contexts where institutional capacity is weak and state structures struggle to meet basic needs. Rooted in moral authority and community trust, religious non-profits serve as catalysts for advocacy that bridges spiritual, ethical, and practical dimensions of social life. This article examines the significance of faith-based advocacy in low-income and emerging economies, where persistent challenges such as poverty, inequality, limited healthcare, and political instability demand holistic interventions. Drawing on illustrative examples, including Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement in Kenya, the analysis highlights how advocacy efforts integrate environmental, social, and democratic goals. By connecting theoretical foundations with practice-oriented insights, the article underscores the continued relevance of religious actors in advancing equity, sustainability, and justice.
