Gaseous radioactive iodine retention on silver-loaded zeolites under varying temperatures and atmospheric conditions

Abstract Silver-loaded zeolites are potential materials for capturing gaseous radioactive iodine released during nuclear accidents. In this study, three commercially available silver-loaded zeolites were evaluated for gaseous radioactive iodine ( 134 I) adsorption using gas chromatography between 25 and 1000 °C under inert, oxidizing, and reducing conditions. The setup was validated with 220 Rn as a tracer. All tested zeolites demonstrated complete iodine retention up to 1000 °C under both oxidizing and reducing conditions. These results provide experimental insight into the thermal stability and iodine retention behavior of silver-loaded zeolites under simulated severe accident conditions.
