Energy Efficient Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access System

Combining non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) systems has recently become one of the emerging areas of research to address the issues facing next generation wireless networks (NGWN). An IRS can be utilized to control the phases of multiple incoming signals, facilitating their constructive combination from various channel paths to improve coverage and increase the strength of the signal received at the receiver’s end. However, NOMA offers wide connectivity and excellent spectral efficiency in minimal latency by making it possible for users to exchange time and frequency resources. An IRS-assisted NOMA system is appropriate for NG wireless networks such as 5G and beyond as it could contribute to improved energy as wel as spectrum efficiency and faster data rates. To enhance the system’s overall sum rate and energy efficiency in a wireless environment, this article explores the IRS-assisted NOMA along with the bit error rate (BER) performance. The simulation findings demonstrates that the NOMA system with IRS assistance performed better than a conventional NOMA in terms of reducing BER and improving energy efficiency, emerging as a promising technique for NGWN.
