Possibility of water detection based on Starlink signals

Passive remote sensing using opportunistic signals and has become an important supplementary method for multispectral and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite remote sensing. However, due to the insufficient number of satellites, its spatial coverage is constrained. Currently, Internet satellites such as Starlink, with thousands of satellites, provide new opportunity signals for remote sensing. This paper mainly presents the basic principle of using Starlink signals for water body detection, discusses the advantages and challenges of using Starlink satellite signals as remote sensing signals, and presents the design of hardware equipment and data processing methods. Finally, through two experiments - roof rainfall experiment and lake surface reflection experiment - the results show that when the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the reflected signal is greater than 3 dB and is approximately 2 dB lower than the direct signal, the reflected surface can be determined to be a water body. This indicates that Starlink signals have potential in water body detection.
