Sustainability and the Sea: Environmental Policy and the Portuguese Canned Fish Sector

Portugal’s canned fish industry, once a dominant force in global seafood exports, has faced significant economic and structural challenges over recent decades. This paper examines how environmentalism and evolving European Union regulations have impacted the Portuguese fish canning sector. New policies have imposed restrictions intended to mitigate overfishing, reduce bycatch, as well as inform consumers. Canning and fishing companies must adapt their production methods and marketing strategies. This study investigates how selected Portuguese canning companies have responded to these regulations, while balancing profitability and environmental responsibility. Findings suggest that while some firms have embraced sustainability through certifications and responsible sourcing, others continue to struggle with rising costs and shifting consumer expectations. This paper highlights the need for ongoing adaptation and proposes future strategies to enhance economic resilience while maintaining environmental integrity within the industry.
