Participant Rights and Protections in Non-Profit Research: Safeguarding Welfare, Vulnerable Groups, and Community Engagement
Protecting participant rights is a cornerstone of ethical non-profit research, particularly when engaging with vulnerable and marginalized communities. This article examines strategies for safeguarding welfare through risk assessments, confidentiality agreements, and ongoing monitoring, while highlighting protections for children, elderly participants, and marginalized groups. It also explores mechanisms for addressing participant concerns and stresses the importance of cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. Beyond safeguarding, the article emphasizes community empowerment through advisory boards, active involvement, and co-ownership of research outcomes. By linking international ethical principles with practical strategies, it provides a roadmap for ensuring participant dignity, accountability, and trust-based research relationships.
