Data protection and privacy are fundamental to ethical research in the non-profit sector, ensuring confidentiality, safeguarding participants’ dignity, and reinforcing organizational trust. This article examines the ethical and practical dimensions of privacy in research involving vulnerable populations, with particular attention to international frameworks such as GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA. It explores techniques including anonymization, pseudonymization, and encryption, while highlighting layered security safeguards—physical, technical, and administrative. Special emphasis is placed on cost-effective strategies for resource-constrained organizations, from open-source tools to community-centered practices.
