Foundations of Research Ethics in the Non-Profit Sector
Research ethics are the foundation of credible and socially responsible knowledge production in the non-profit sector. This article traces the historical development of modern ethical standards—from the Nuremberg Code and the Declaration of Helsinki to the Belmont Report—and examines their enduring influence on contemporary practice. It highlights the core principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice, while analyzing their application in non-profit research involving vulnerable communities. The discussion addresses challenges specific to developing countries, including weak regulation, cultural barriers, and limited resources. Strategic approaches such as community engagement, capacity building, and robust ethical review are emphasized as pathways for ensuring accountability, building trust, and strengthening the legitimacy of non-profit research initiatives.
