Polymorphism and Superconductivity in RuO2

We report substrate-induced superconductivity in rutile RuO2 thin films. By controlling the film’s crystal structure through epitaxial growth on differently oriented TiO2 substrates, we observe superconductivity at 2.1 K exclusively in films grown on (110) TiO2. This superconducting phase, characterized by a coherence length of ξ0 = 13.9 nm, correlates with a structural transition from P42/mnm to Pcab. First-principles calculations confirm this symmetry reduction (D4h14 → D2h15) in (110) oriented films, demonstrating the critical role of lattice symmetry and bond anisotropy in enabling superconductivity in RuO2.
