PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AMONG CHILDREN WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES: PERSPECTIVES FROM THE SPECIALIZED LITERATURE
Physical activity during physical education classes or free time is undervalued, even though these moments represent important opportunities for movement. Moreover, participation in organized sports is lower among young people with intellectual disabilities (ID), as they tend to be less autonomous and more dependent on adult support. Programs such as the Special Olympics Unified Sports provide examples of initiatives aimed at supporting their inclusion and participation in sports activities. To improve this situation, it is necessary to expand research, use larger sample sizes, and clarify the type and severity of disabilities in order to develop appropriate and effective interventions.
