Reflections on Homeland Insecurity: The Strategic Anatomy of Civil Wars to Come
Once dismissed as alarmist, the prospect of civil war in the West has entered mainstream strategic discourse. This essay traces the deepening crisis, beginning with the erosion of governmental legitimacy and rising societal fractures. It explores ethnic unrest, elite failure, and the widening economic expectation gap, alongside the emergence of leaderless movements and insurgent narratives. The analysis highlights the fragility of global cities, the rural–urban divide, and the destabilizing triad of digital networks, immigration, and declining social capital. Ultimately, it argues that Western unrest is not transient but marks the slow, grinding onset of civil war already underway.
