Meconium Periorchitis, a Rare Condition Associated with Symptomatic Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: A Case Report
Initial bilateral testicular ultrasound (Figs 1A andB) demonstrated a collection of heterogeneous material predominantly in the right hemiscrotum surrounding the right testis, containing numerous small echogenic foci and some internal vascularity.A repeat ultrasound 2 days later showed similar findings of extra-testicular heterogeneous material in the right hemiscrotum with numerous hyperechoic foci and a small amount of fluid.Vascularity within this material was thought to be "sparkle" artifact from calcified echogenic foci, raising the suspicion of meconium periorchitis.Abdominal ultrasound and X-ray were performed, which showed no intra-abdominal pathology. He proceeded to have a laparoscopy and scrotal exploration on day 11 of life.Operative findings included intraabdominal meconium staining with no frank contamination, a left inguinal hernia, and a right hydrocele, which was drained. There was meconium staining only in the right scrotal sac.
