Design of NTP Protocol Time Synchronization System Based on ZYNQ

To address issues such as poor system coordination, data inconsistency, and control anomalies caused by clock drift in critical application domains, this paper designs and implements a high-precision Network Time Protocol (NTP) synchronization system based on the ZYNQ platform. The system uses the ZYNQ XC7Z020 as the core processor, integrated with a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) module for high-precision time acquisition, ensuring the system receives a unified and stable time source. In terms of hardware architecture, the Programmable Logic (PL) part implements nanosecond-level time management through a high-speed counter, aligning with the PPS (Pulse Per Second) signal provided by the GNSS to ensure high consistency of system time. The Processing System(PS) part is responsible for NTP protocol parsing and network communication, allowing the system to participate in time synchronization in a network. The system supports both NTP server and client modes, offering flexibility and adaptability. Initial test results indicate that the system can achieve microsecond-level time synchronization accuracy in a local area network connected through at least one switch (multi-switch topologies have not yet been validated). This high-precision performance is sufficient to meet the time synchronization requirements of small-scale networks, such as industrial automation field networks and university teaching platforms, providing strong support for building highly reliable and consistent distributed systems.
