Design and Implementation of a Multi-Functional M-Type Ferrite-Based Modulated Surface for Communication and Radar Systems

This study introduces a versatile structure that incorporates a modulated surface with an M-type ferrite slab to enable beam steering, signal transmission, and electromagnetic absorption for advanced communication and radar technologies. Unlike traditional dielectric substrates, the use of M-type ferrite facilitates independent control of frequency-division characteristics across various frequency bands. The designed modulated surface achieves both anomalous reflection at lower frequencies and absorption at higher frequencies. Additionally, a band-pass frequency selective surface (FSS) is strategically placed beneath the M-type ferrite to maintain a transmission band without hindering the other functionalities. Fabrication and measurement results validate the modulated surface's performance as an anomalous reflector at 39 GHz, a band-pass filter at 57 GHz, and an absorber at 77 GHz.
