Miniaturized Single-Layer Filtering Patch Antenna with Enhanced Gain and Bandwidth

A miniaturized single-layer filtering patch antenna is presented in this paper. It mainly consists of an Lshaped feeding probe, two rectangular patches loaded with shorting pins and slots, and two parasitic strips. Operating at TM<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">10</inf> mode, the rectangular patch and the feeding probe provide two resonant modes in the passband. The out-of-phase currents on the feeding L-probe and the rectangular patches generate a radiation null at the lower band edge. A pair of Tslots introduces another radiation null at the upper band edge. Both radiation nulls are flexibly controlled. Owing to the loaded shorting pins, this design has a small size of 0.33 × 0.33 × 0.06 <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$(\lambda_{0}^{3}$</tex>. For demonstration, an antenna prototype was fabricated and measured, which covers the UWB band of channels 6 and 8. The prototype features an impedance bandwidth of 11.1%, a peak gain of 7.8 dBi, and a high frequency selectivity of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$K= 1.9$</tex>.
