Phase-Correcting Metasurface for Sidelobe Suppression in Fabry-Pérot Cavity Antennas with Spherical Ground
This paper presents a methodology to overcome the issues of higher sidelobes for the Fabry Pérot cavity antennas (FPCAs) designed with spherically modified grounds (SMGs). The spherical modification of the ground plane in the FPCA design excites the higher-order cavity modes, which suffer from higher sidelobes when radiated into the farfield. In this paper, we employ a phase-correcting metasurface (PCMS) to transform the non-uniform aperture phase of the FPCA with SMG at higher-order modes to a uniform one, leading to − 10dB suppression of sidelobes compared to the main lobe. With the aid of full-wave simulations, we showcase that integrating the proposed PCMS enhances the antenna gain (more than 3 dB), achieving a peak gain of 21.9 dB while ensuring a good impedance matching. The proposed antenna with PCMS is an attractive solution for long-distance communication and satellite connectivity.
